Gramps Braggin Rights Boys Basketball Pre-season Prognostications - Metro Conference 9/18/21

 Today's focus is on the Metro Conference with MICDS, Westminster Academy, Priory, John Burroughs, Lutheran North and Lutheran South and Principia.

MICDS has dominated of late but a late season upset by Westminster launched the Westminster into a long playoff run and a runner-up trophy to Vashon in class four.

Westminster brings back nearly the entire team with 93% of their scoring returning and they will be the odds on favorite to win the Metro League and potentially another shot at a state championship.

I will be especially interested to see how coach Peewee Lenard handles the John Burrough team, one with a lot of potential, that could really blossom under Peewee's detailed eye and demand for excellence.  A real coach's coach, Peewee was an assistant for the Brad Beal 17U national runner-up EYBL, coached by former Burrough's coach Corey Frazier.  Peewee has developed some great kids in his St. Louis Magic program and I hope the Burroughs kids will respond and destroy my projection.

All of my predictions are statistically-based upon a mathematical model with VPS, defensive points allowed, point differential and returnee scoring.  See my Intro for more info.

 I talked about MLK yesterday and then found this YouTube video of James Taylor's "Shed a little Light" by the Maccabeats and Naturally 7 singing the song in front of Lincoln's Memorial.  It is a stirring performance and tribute to Martin Luther King and worth watching HERE . So, lately, I have been trying to shed a little light on Missouri class four boys basketball teams.  Part of my problem was with Vashon, a team that is always seemingly on top of their class, and even one of the best teams in all of Missouri.  The problem has to do with rating the teams on their schedule....  Nationally ranked teams from across the United States.  Makes it difficult because rating all of their opponents requires diving down another deep rabbit hole to rate those teams before I can assign a rating for the Wolverines.  I often have to wait until mid-January, after they have played more local teams, to get an accurate rating of Vashon. What makes a great feeder program?

 I recently published an interview with Smithville head basketball coach Eric Bennaka, who talked about how he was trying to change the culture in the school and town and build a more successful basketball program.  I thought that Eric had some great points and it was worthwhile to share on the blog.  Check it out HERE . Since then, I saw some Tweets about the Eureka Wildcat feeder program skill nights.     The Eureka Jr Wildcat feeder program is run by Matt Benz as part of the Eureka Basketball Booster Club which helps sponsor the program.   The program is run under the careful eye of Eureka boys head coach Austin Kirby, and James Alsup, Eureka girls head coach, who are the chief architects of the program.    It is a great success story and, again, a worthwhile read.  I have watched both the girls and boys Eureka high school teams for about six years and have always been impressed with the teamwork and cohesiveness of the team...

Which Missouri Boys' teams improved the most during the 2021-2022 season - 3/21/2022

 One reader asked which teams had improved the most from the beginning to the end of the season.  Since it takes at least a month to establish decent ratings for each team, I took the rankings and ratings from late December and compared them to the final ratings and rankings.   I took the difference between the early and late ratings and sorted the teams by the largest improvement to the teams that got worse, ie. most erosion in rating or ranking.  I did the same for rankings of all 547 MSHSAA teams.  This difference may be an actual improvement or it could be I underestimated the team's rating early in the season.  It is all in fun.
