Gramps Braggin Rights Missouri Girls Class 3 final ratings 3/13/2022
There was never in doubt in my mind who would be the state champion of Missouri Girls class three this March. It would be one of three teams, El Dorado, Strafford or Skyline. Those three teams were the creme de la creme of class three girls all season long.
There was just two problems with those three teams. First, Strafford and Skyline were in the same district and only one would move forward to the state bracket. Unfortunately for Skyline, my #3 team in class three for most of the year, they could not wrest the district title from Strafford, so the #3 team in the state sat out the state tournament.
The second problem was this... Strafford and El Dorado were both on the bottom bracket and so the #1 and #2 teams in the state met in the semi-final rather than the final and El Dorado pulled off a two-point win over Strafford. It was an exciting semi-final but shouldn't it have been the class three championship?
If MSHSAA had an analytical tool like Gramps Braggin Rights ratings, they could seed teams mid-season in appropriate districts so that the best teams met at state and they could seed the teams in the state bracket so that the two best teams would meet in the state championship game. Isn't that the way it should work? I could give you countless examples of how unfair the current geographic districts "that we have always done it this way" and it shanks very good teams before the big dance.
Time for some changes in MSHSAA basketball tournament seeding, don't you think?
